Braces FAQ

Types of Braces

Every set of braces does the same fundamental job: applies steady, controlled pressure so teeth move through bone into better positions. What changes between them is how visible they are, how they feel, and how often you sit in the chair.

Dr. Dhol will recommend a type based on what your child’s bite actually needs, and then explain why, because the honest answer is that the appliance matters far less than the plan behind it and the timing of when you start. Most families have a preference by the end of the consultation, and there is usually more than one reasonable option.

Traditional Metal

Metal braces have a reputation built on how they looked thirty years ago, and it has not caught up with the hardware. Today’s brackets are a fraction of the size, the wires are lighter, and the whole system sits far closer to the teeth than the brackets most parents remember from their own adolescence. They remain the most versatile option available, capable of handling the complicated rotations and bite corrections that other systems struggle with, and they are the most durable thing we can put in a nine-year-old’s mouth.

For younger patients, the visibility is often the appeal rather than the drawback. Elastic ties come in every color; they change at every adjustment visit, and a surprising number of kids treat the choice as the best part of the appointment. Metal is also the most economical option, which for a family treating more than one child is worth saying plainly.

Clear / Ceramic

Ceramic braces work exactly as metal ones do, but the brackets are made from a tooth-coloured material that blends into the enamel rather than standing against it. From a conversational distance, they are genuinely difficult to notice. For self-conscious teenagers, and for adults who spend their working day in front of other people, that difference is often the thing that turns a maybe into a yes.

There are real trade-offs, and we would rather you hear them now. Ceramic brackets are slightly larger than their metal equivalents and somewhat more brittle, so they can break under the kind of impact a metal bracket would shrug off. The brackets themselves resist staining, but the clear elastic ties holding the wire can discolor between visits if coffee, curry, and red wine are part of daily life. We change those ties at every appointment, so it resets, but it is worth knowing before you choose. For most people, the aesthetics are worth it, and for patients with particularly demanding bite corrections, Dr. Dhol may recommend metal instead.

Damon Braces

Damon braces are a self-ligating system, which means the bracket holds the wire with a small sliding door built into it rather than an elastic tie wrapped around the outside. That one change has a few practical consequences. There is less friction between wire and bracket, nothing sitting on the bracket face to trap plaque, and no ties to replace, which usually translates into fewer and shorter adjustment visits over the course of treatment.

Damon suits the way Dr. Dhol practices. The system is designed around developing the dental arch and creating space rather than closing it, which aligns closely with a treatment philosophy built on making room for teeth rather than removing teeth to make room. They are available in both metal and clear brackets. One caution, since you will read otherwise elsewhere: the research on whether self-ligating braces genuinely finish treatment faster is mixed, and we will not promise you speed. What they reliably offer is a cleaner bracket, a lighter feel, and fewer trips to Morgan Crossing.

Braces For Kids

Most parents are surprised to learn that a child can benefit from orthodontics years before they have a full set of permanent teeth. Between roughly four and eleven, the jaws are still forming, and that is precisely what makes the window valuable. Treatment at this stage is rarely a full set of braces. It is more often a partial set on a few key teeth, sometimes paired with an expander, working to guide how the jaws develop and create room for permanent teeth that have not arrived yet.

The goal is not a perfect smile at nine years old. It is a mouth that permanent teeth can erupt into properly, which frequently means the teenage phase of treatment is shorter, simpler, or in some cases unnecessary. It is also how crowding gets resolved by creating space rather than by extracting healthy teeth later on. Dr. Dhol will tell you honestly if your child is too young to start, and many first visits here end with a plan to watch and reassess in a year. That is a legitimate outcome, and it costs you nothing to find out which one applies.

Braces For Teens

The teenage years remain the most common time for full orthodontic treatment, for a straightforward reason: the permanent teeth are in, the jaws are still finishing their growth, and the body responds to treatment efficiently. Most comprehensive cases run somewhere between fourteen and twenty-four months, and Dr. Dhol will give you a specific estimate for your teenager rather than a range pulled from a brochure.

What tends to matter more at this age is everything around the treatment. Teenagers care how braces look, so the clear and Damon options are worth discussing properly rather than dismissing on cost. They play sports, so we will fit a mouthguard that works over brackets. They lose things, they forget elastics, and they will not always tell you when a bracket comes loose, which is where remote monitoring earns its place: we see the problem in their weekly scan instead of six weeks later. And because they are old enough to understand their own treatment, Dr. Dhol explains it to them directly. Teenagers who know why they are wearing elastics wear them.

Braces For Adults

Bone remodels throughout life, which is the entire reason adult orthodontics works. Our patients have started treatment in their thirties, their fifties, and well beyond, and the biology cooperates at every one of those ages. It simply takes a little longer than it would have at fourteen, because adult bone turns over more slowly.

Adults come to us for different reasons than children do. Some were never treated. Some were treated decades ago, stopped wearing a retainer at nineteen, and have watched the teeth drift back ever since. Others have developed a bite problem that is now wearing their teeth unevenly or causing jaw discomfort. Adult treatment also tends to involve more moving parts, because there may be crowns, bridges, implants, or gum health to work around, and Dr. Dhol coordinates directly with your family dentist so the sequence makes sense. Ceramic and Damon clear brackets keep the whole thing discreet enough for professional life, and Invisalign is often a strong option worth comparing. What we hear most often, about a year in, is some version of wishing they had done it sooner.

Braces FAQ

Do braces hurt?

Putting them on does not hurt. The teeth feel tender for three or four days afterward as they begin to move, and again for a day or so after each adjustment. Most children manage with soft foods and over-the-counter pain relief, and by the end of the first week they have largely stopped noticing. The brackets can rub the inside of the cheeks at first; the wax we send home handles that until the mouth adapts, which usually takes about a fortnight.

How long will my child be in braces?

Most comprehensive cases fall between fourteen and twenty-four months, though shorter courses of eight to ten months are common when the problem is limited or when early treatment has already done part of the work. Dr. Dhol gives you a specific estimate at the consultation based on your child’s imaging rather than an average. The single biggest factor in staying on schedule is wearing elastics as instructed.

How often are appointments?

Traditionally, every six to eight weeks. With remote monitoring, many patients come in less often than that, because we can confirm from their scans that treatment is tracking and only bring them in when there is something to do. We are open Monday to Thursday from eight to five, Friday until four-thirty, with select Saturdays, and we will work around school hours wherever the schedule allows.

What can't my child eat?

Anything hard, sticky, or chewy enough to pull a bracket off: hard candy, ice, nuts, popcorn, caramel, gum. Crunchy foods like apples and carrots are fine if cut into pieces rather than bitten into whole. It is a shorter list than most families expect, and the first week is the hardest part of adjusting to it.

Can my child still play sports or a wind instrument?

Yes to both. Sports require a mouthguard fitted to work over brackets, and we will sort that out before the season starts. Wind and brass players usually need a week or two to adjust their embouchure, and there is wax and a bracket guard to help during the transition. Musicians should mention it at the consultation so Dr. Dhol can factor it in.

What happens after the braces come off?

Retainers, and this part matters more than most people are told. Teeth have a natural tendency to drift back toward where they started, particularly in the first year. Full-time wear at first, then nights only, then nights indefinitely for most patients. Because we hold your digital scan on file, a lost retainer can be replaced from the existing record without starting the process again.

Do we need a referral from our dentist?

No. You are welcome to book a consultation directly. Many families come to us through their family dentist, and many find us on their own; either way, Dr. Dhol will communicate with your dentist throughout treatment so your child’s overall care stays coordinated.

How much do braces cost?

It depends on what your child needs, which is why we give you the full cost and the monthly figure in writing at the consultation rather than a starting-from number here. Financing is in-house and interest-free; we bill insurance directly, and no-down-payment options are available. Nothing gets added partway through treatment.

We’ve had such a wonderful experience at Beyond Braces with both of my boys, Princeton and Derrick. The entire team is so kind, patient, and welcoming, and they always make my kids feel comfortable and cared for. They take the time to explain everything clearly and never make us feel rushed. As a parent, it means so much to know my kids are in such good hands. We’re very happy with the care they’ve received and would absolutely recommend Beyond Braces to other families! ❤️

Extremely satisfied with service from Dr Dhol and staff. Multiple orthodontists recommended pulling my impacted canine teeth but Dr Dhol had a completely different approach that didn't involve extraction!

We had our first visit to Beyond Braces in April, and Christy and Hope were absolutely wonderful. They were so warm, welcoming, and kind, and they did a great job making my daughter feel comfortable and at ease. The warm cookies in the lobby were such a sweet touch, too! 🍪❤️ Dr. Dhol was very thorough, patient, and knowledgeable. I honestly don’t even know where to start because Beyond Braces completely exceeded my expectations!⭐️ From the second we walked in, the atmosphere was incredible. The office is bright, open, modern, and has such an uplifting, almost spa-like energy. It doesn’t feel like a typical orthodontic office at all. There’s even a really nice coffee bar for the adults, which is such a thoughtful touch!⭐️ What really blew me away was the treatment coordination experience. They have a private consultation room where everything is explained thoroughly, both verbally and visually. They use the TV to walk you through treatment with video demonstrations, making everything so easy to understand. And the sweetest detail — they had my daughter’s name displayed on the TV when we went into the room. That personal touch made such an impression on us.⭐️ They’ve truly thought about everything for kids. There’s a movie theatre and games room for them to enjoy while they wait, along with an awesome points system where kids can earn prizes at every visit. I especially love that it encourages good grades and healthy habits, making orthodontic visits something kids can actually get excited about.⭐️ Beyond Braces has created an experience that is so much more than just getting braces. They’ve made it fun, personalized, educational, and genuinely enjoyable for kids, while making parents feel completely taken care of. We left feeling so excited and confident about the journey ahead. Beyond Braces has gone beyond the bar for what I expected from an orthodontic office, and I would recommend them in a heartbeat! ⭐️

We were referred to this orthodontist by our dentist, and we have been so happy with our experience. From the very beginning, everyone has been welcoming, helpful, and upfront about the process. We really appreciate how clearly everything has been explained to us and how comfortable they have made the experience for our son. Most importantly, our son actually enjoys going to his appointments! The team has created such a positive and welcoming atmosphere, which has made a potentially intimidating experience feel easy and exciting for him. We feel very comfortable knowing he is in such good hands and would definitely recommend this orthodontist to other families.

So far everything has been great, at the time of this writing we are just finishing with a palette expander and on our way to finishing phase 1. Excellent Orthodontic care with great results thus far. Friendly staff who are attentive and kind.
